Marine Construction in Australia
Construction within and around bodies of water is crucial to supporting Australia’s maritime infrastructure and trade. This includes the construction of ports, jetties, wharves, docks, seawalls, breakwaters, and berthing facilities. These structures are essential for shipping, transportation, and the functioning of ports and harbours.
Another aspect of marine construction revolves around coastal protection, dredging and supporting the oil and gas industry which requires extensive offshore infrastructure and the installation of platforms, pipelines and other elements.
Steel plays a major role in each of these applications to ensure the longevity and structural integrity of projects.
Piers and Wharves:
Steel pilings and structural components are often used in the construction of piers and wharves. These components provide the necessary strength to support heavy loads, such as cargo and vehicles, while withstanding the corrosive effects of saltwater. Corrosion-resistant steel coatings or stainless steel are often applied to protect these structures.
Jetties and Docks:
Steel sheet piles, piles, and frames are used to build jetties and docks. Steel is well-suited for these applications because it can handle the dynamic forces of waves, tides, and vessel mooring. Steel pilings are driven into the seabed to provide a stable foundation.
Seawalls and Breakwaters:
Steel sheet pile walls and bulkheads are used in the construction of seawalls and breakwaters to protect coastal areas from erosion and storm surges. These structures are designed to absorb wave energy and prevent the undermining of coastlines. Steel’s strength and ability to resist corrosion make it a reliable choice for these protective barriers.
Dredging Equipment:
Dredgers, which are vital in maintaining navigational channels and harbours, often feature steel components such as the cutterhead, suction pipes, and dredging arms. These parts must withstand abrasive wear and the corrosive effects of seawater.
Mooring Systems:
Mooring systems, including bollards and cleats, are made from steel to secure ships and vessels at docks and berths. These components need to withstand the significant loads and forces exerted by large vessels.
Oil and Gas Infrastructure:
Steel is used in the construction of offshore oil and gas platforms, subsea pipelines, and drilling equipment. The structural components of these installations are made from high-strength steel to withstand the harsh marine environment, including the corrosive effects of seawater and the dynamic forces of waves and currents.
Bridge and Overpass Components:
In cases where marine construction projects involve bridge construction, steel is commonly used for the bridge superstructure, including beams, girders, and deck components. These elements must withstand the exposure to saltwater and the loading from vehicular traffic.
Marine Equipment:
Various marine construction projects require specialised equipment such as cranes, winches, and marine pile drivers, which are made from steel to ensure the necessary strength and durability for marine operations.
Coating and Corrosion Protection:
To enhance the longevity of steel components in marine environments, they are often coated with protective materials, such as anti-corrosion coatings and paints.
